说起冰岛电影，人们最津津乐道的故事与其说是其电影本身，到不如说首先是那些“可爱的热心观众们”。电影给人们一种视听盛宴，陶冶情操，让人释怀。1919年，一个来自丹麦的摄制组在冰岛拍了一部根据冰岛畅销小说改编的影片《博格一家的故事》。影片中所展示的冰岛美丽的风光使人们开始了与电影的认同。1944年，冰岛最终从丹麦获得独立后，其民族的电影业开始焕发出生命力。奥斯卡.吉斯拉松于50年代拍摄了一批具有纪录风格的影片，加布埃尔.阿克赛尔则把冰岛的英雄传说《红披风》搬上银幕(1967)。而作为一个新时代先驱的则是雷尼尔·奥德松的《谋杀的故事》(1977)，人们可以在其中清晰地看出法国新浪潮电影的影响。70年代末，冰岛在北欧国家中最后一个建立了电影基金。一批从国外学习归来的年轻导演与一些在电视台工作的志同道合者一起成为电影的中坚。他们拒绝了好莱坞式的商业电影，而立足于本国题材，除了继续把冰岛的“英雄传奇”搬上银幕外，还拍摄了不少关于现实生活的作品。例如毕业于英国国立电影学校的奥古斯特·格维兹门松的处女作《土地和儿子》，赫拉芬.京勒伊革松的《父亲与遗产》（均为1980年）等。他们的影片把壮丽的冰岛风光和人们现实中的故事结合起来，为冰岛电影，也为他们自己赢得了国际性名声。80年代以来，尽管冰岛电影在经济上一直处于困境，但由于观众对民族电影不遗余力的支持，在顽强生存中的冰岛电影直到今天仍能产生引人注目的作品。如近年来斯来恩．贝特尔松的《马格努斯和索尔. 弗里德里克松的《自然的孩子们》均获得了欧洲电影奖提名，后者 还于1991年获得欧洲的“费力克斯”奖最佳音乐奖。
